Speakers
Alan Lomax, PhD
Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences
@
Queen's University
Dr. Lomax is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Queen’s University, Canada. He was educated at the University of Ulster and the University of Melbourne. Following postdoctoral training at the University of Calgary, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at Queen’s University in 2006. Dr. Lomax’s laboratory has studied neuroimmune interactions during gut inflammation and more recently has focused on the identification of mediators derived from the microbiota that modulate visceral sensation.
Stuart Brierley, PhD
Head of the Visceral Pain research Group
@
Flinders University
Prof Stuart Brierley is Head of the Visceral Pain research Group at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). He is also Director of the Hopwood Centre for Neurobiology and co-leader of the Lifelong Health theme at SAHMRI. His research focuses on mechanisms and novel treatments for visceral pain. He currently receives research funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia, the Australian Research Council and the NIH. Stuart is Past President of the Australasian Neurogastroenterology and Motility Association (ANGMA) and was co-chair of the Local Organizing Committee for Federation for Neurogastroenterology and Motility conference 2021.
Brian Gulbransen, PhD, Moderator
Foundation Professor
@
Michigan State University
Brian Gulbransen is a MSU Foundation Professor in the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University and an ANMS councilor. Dr. Gulbransen’s research program focuses on mechanisms of neuroinflammation in the intestine with a specific interest in the role of enteric glia in health and disease. Work from Dr. Gulbransen’s lab has uncovered some of the fundamental rules that govern intercellular communication between glia, neurons, and immune cells in the gut. Dr. Gulbransen is currently supported by grants from the NIDDK which focus on the roles of enteric glia in gut motility and pain, and a PPG from NHLBI that focus on interactions between adipocytes and nerve fibers in perivascular adipose tissue.
Elyanne Ratcliffe, MD, Moderator
Associate Professor of Pediatrics
@
McMaster University
Elyanne Ratcliffe is Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at McMaster University. She applies her interests in gastrointestinal motility, developmental biology and nutrition by serving as the Medical Director of the Feeding and Swallowing Team (FAST) Clinic. Dr. Ratcliffe has an active research program and supervises both undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory. She is a full member of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute and an associate member in the Department of Biology. Her research program is based on her combined clinical experience and research interests in neurogastroenterology, and focuses on the developmental programming and function of the gut-brain axis.
