Homeroom with Education Leaders | Reconsidering School Choice in the Wake of COVID-19
Description
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a range of unprecedented monumental shifts to K-12 learning and instruction, including a significant increase in parent and family involvement in their child’s education. One result of this new engagement and awareness is renewed attention on school choice policies and the options families have to customize the education their child receives. Join us for a discussion of how perceptions and policies around school choice have shifted as a result of the pandemic, the short and long-term impacts of these shifts on education at-large, and how educators and policymakers at the state, district, and school levels can provide all parents and families with access to the information, resources, and supports needed to ensure their children are receiving a high-quality education that meets their needs.

The commissioner is responsible for the organizational goals of the department and represents the public interest in the administration of the functions of the department of education. In his role as commissioner, Edelblut serves on a number of boards, including as a trustee for the University System of New Hampshire, which includes the University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, Keene State College and Granite State College; as an ex-officio trustee for the Community College System of New Hampshire; a member of the New Hampshire Higher Education Commission; a member of the National Assessment Governing Board; among others. Edelblut has a vision to make education accessible to everyone. “The equity gap is too large and it has persisted for too long. Everything needs to be on the table as we consider how to improve educational outcomes for all students,” stated Edelblut. Juliet Squire (Partner @Bellwether Education Partners) Juliet Squire is a partner in the Policy and Evaluation practice area. Since joining Bellwether in 2013, she has provided policy analysis and advising support to school operators and support organizations, foundations, advocacy groups, and think tanks. She has authored reports on federal and state policies on charter schools, school governance, private school management, low-cost private schools and microschools, and rural education, among others. Juliet has been published in outlets such as U.S. News & World Report, Education Next, Education Post, and The 74. Before joining Bellwether, Juliet managed school board relationships and new school development for National Heritage Academies, supporting school leaders and charter authorizers and helping launch new charter schools in Louisiana, New York, and Wisconsin. She also held roles at the New Jersey Department of Education and the American Enterprise Institute. She is the former board chair of a charter school in Washington, DC. Letha Muhammad (Director @Education Justice Alliance) Letha works to dismantle the School to Prison and School to Deportation Pipeline in Wake County Public Schools (NC) and in other districts across the state. She believes that one of the most effective ways to dismantle the School to Prison Pipeline is to work with parents and families that are directly impacted by this issue which will help ensure that Black and other students of color have access to a quality education. As such, her work includes engagement and leadership training with parents, families and community members to ensure they know their rights and how to advocate for themselves and their students. Letha represents EJA on the Coordinating Committee of the National Dignity in Schools Campaign and serves as co-chair of their fundraising/finance committee. Letha is also a member of Muslim’s for Social Justice (MSJ) and on the steering committee of the Movement to End Islamophobia and Racism (MERI). She is a wife and mother of two school age children and one college student.
