This webinar will discuss the medical science of substance use and addiction, important medication and treatment for pregnant women and strategies promoting positive outcomes. It will also highlight an analysis of a chemical endangerment law, its purpose, data analysis and the law's impact.

She is a clinician and medical educator training tomorrow’s doctors and pediatric residents. She is a lead faculty attending in the UAB Pediatric Primary Care Clinic and co-leads the regions NICU Follow-up Team to optimize health for medically complex graduates of Alabama’s Neonatal Intensive Care Units. She has lobbied, testified and advocated in opposition to Alabama’s anti-transgender legislation and Chemical Endangerment Laws. She has uncovered a passion for policy engagement and health equity also leading the Pediatric Department’s DEI Council and serving on the DEI subcommittee of the UAB Faculty Senate. Benjamin McMichael, Ph.D., JD (Associate Professor of Law @University of Alabama School of Law) Benjamin McMichael is an associate professor of law at the University of Alabama School of Law. He earned a BS in Mathematical Economics from Wake Forest University and a JD and PhD in law and economics from Vanderbilt University. Before joining the faculty at Alabama, Benjamin completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, where he taught healthcare law and economics. Prior to his fellowship, he served as a law clerk to Judge Carolyn Dineen King on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Benjamin’s research focuses on the law and economics of healthcare, with a particular focus on healthcare workforce regulation. His research has been published in the Stanford Law Review, the Georgetown Law Journal, the Journal of Health Economics, the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, Medical Care, and the Milbank Quarterly. Dana Sussman, JD, MPH (Acting Executive Director @Pregnancy Justice) Dana Sussman, JD, MPH (she/her/hers) joined NAPW in 2021 as Deputy Executive Director. Most recently, Dana served for six years as Deputy Commissioner of Policy and Intergovernmental Affairs at the New York City Commission on Human Rights, the agency charged with enforcing one of the most comprehensive antidiscrimination laws in the country. At the Commission, Dana served as advisor to the Commissioner and as a member of the executive team responsible for determining and implementing the Commission’s policy, legislative, and communications strategy during a period of rapid expansion of the agency's size, budget, and mandate. In addition, Dana oversaw the Commission's gender justice policy portfolio, including efforts to address sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination, and gender identity discrimination, among others.
