MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME
About the Webinar
At critical moments in Malaysian history, some political parties have risen unexpectedly on swells of public discontent. None, however, has matched the achievement of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR, or People’s Justice Party) which, as a major partner in the Pakatan Harapan coalition, defeated the 61-year-old Barisan Nasional regime three years ago.
The political situation has since been unsettled by the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in February 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic, and economic contraction. Even so, PKR remains a rallying-point of opposition to the incumbent Perikatan Nasional regime.
All this makes it compelling to examine PKR’s importance to Malaysian politics. To do so, this Webinar discusses five themes of PKR’s politics, namely: its origin and evolution in crises; stress on coalition-building; commitment to multiethnic politics; ‘humane economy’ as reform agenda; and unique bond with Anwar. The Webinar does not present a “SWOT” analysis of the party but suggests that these five themes may resonate with current conditions.
