Cross-Cultural Considerations for the United States Fire Service (1.5 CEs)

This presentation will explore the unique needs of the fire service under the umbrella of police and public safety psychology. Dr. Wheldon will discuss the way the fire service has approached pre-employment and incumbent hiring standards through the National Fire Protection Association and contrast them with those listed in the Peace Officer Standards and Training. She will transition into exploring the arbitrary vs. business necessity standards which may impact diverse applicants including people of color and women as well as the ways psychologists may contribute to hiring outcomes. Lastly, she will identify challenges fire service leaders face trying to embrace social change while also holding dear to cultural traditions.

2. Participant will explain the challenges for applicants from diverse applicants within the United States Fire Service.
3. Participant will describe the potential leadership conflicts between cultural tradition and progress within the fire service.
