FILIPINAS AT WAR: The Role of Filipino Women in Times of Conflict

Jose Antonio Custodio
Military Historian

Overview. The Philippines is a country that is not a stranger to conflict. From pre-colonial times up to the present, the Philippines experienced and is still experiencing sudden uprisings, protracted rebellions, and war. Its society is as unstable as the seismic and volcanic location it is situated in. These conflicts oftentimes result in the total mobilization of the community or nation depending on the nature of the war and its scope. In many instances, women are called to serve not only the country, but also the causes that they advocate. Thus in commemoration of Women’s Month, a presentation on Filipinas in war will provide a perspective of their various and developing roles in those times of social upheaval. We will see here that despite the machismo and misogyny prevailing in Philippine society, Filipinas occupied leadership roles, undertook dangerous missions, and fought against superior foes. These are roles that defied the Maria Clara ideal that a patriarchal society has been trying to force on Filipinas throughout history.
