There are several transparent plastics such as cellulose nitrate, vinyl’s, olefins, and styrenics (thermoplastics) as well as silicones and polyurethanes (thermosets). Clarity is a function of the polymeric amorphous and semi-crystalline structure, in-line and post-processing thermal treatments. While selecting any plastic material based upon desired functions, the cost becomes equally important. This brief overview will clarify the competitive pros and cons of many commercial polymer families that have targeted the packaging, medical, optical, electronic, and transportation global industries.

He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. Professor Driscoll was Chair of the ASTM D20 Committee on Plastics Sections on Long-Term Properties and Dynamic Mechanical Properties, the D20 Advisory Subcommittee, a member of the D20 Executive Subcommittee, an appointed member of ASTM International COTCO, and an elected member of the ASTM International Board of Directors. He received the SPE International Education Award in 2004. He has presented and published more than 100 technical articles, organised several plastics conferences, consulted for many international plastics-oriented companies, and is a United Nations Consulting Fellow for Rheology.
