4-6 Grade Virtual Tour: LA Starts Here! - Pío de Jesús Pico
What clues does a portrait of a person tell us about life in the past? What stories does a portrait hide? Students will put on their investigative glasses to examine how pictures and portraits leave historical clues. By looking closely at photograph portraits of Pío de Jesús Pico, the last Mexican Governor of Alta California, students will learn about three phases of California history through the life of one historical figure.

Workshop: Take a close look at the portraits of Pío Jesús Pico, what can they tell us about who he was? Students will participate in a guided visual analysis of photographs and will learn how to create their own self-portraits including objects and images to represent who they are.
