Developing an IoT System - AFNOG 2022
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most fashionable subjects in computer science today. The reasons are today’s very cheap but nevertheless very powerful micro-controllers, offering built-in network interfaces, as well as decreasing prices for high speed Internet access.
There is a high demand for well trained IoT engineers, but the number of universities in Africa offering courses on micro-controller hardware and software with a strong emphasis on hands-on experience is rather sparse.
This presentation will show how to build a simple IoT system.
The tutorial will first give an introduction of the Internet of Things before looking the the Things part of of IoT. It will show how to read out sensors and control actuators using the ESP32, a popular micro-controller, featuring plenty of interfaces to the outside world as well as a WiFi interface, giving access to the Internet part of IoT. Step by step a simple IoT system is built with live demos. Programming is done with (Micro)Python but good knowledge of the programming language is not needed to follow the tutorial.
All the software is Open Source and participants can easily procure the necessary devices and recreate the system on their own.
Most of the presented material was developed for a course on IoT, that was given at the University of Cape Coast (Ghana) at the beginning of 2021.
