Tuberculosis in Children: A Century of Progress, but a Global Threat Remains
In 1890, almost one in three children in the U.S. died before the age of 5. A prime cause? Infectious diseases. At the close of the century, society began to focus more on maternal and child health, including tuberculosis. Child mortality rates dropped significantly between the 1910s – 1940s tuberculosis was addressed through the use of fresh air, nutrition, and health programs created specifically for children.

Join the Museum and Dr. Vandana Madhavan, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the Mass General Hospital and Salem Hospital, for an exploration of TB programs in the US and abroad.

We’ll share materials from our archives. Learn about the North Reading Sanitarium, hear how community-based organizations opened fresh-air camps for children, and get an overview of tuberculosis in children today.
