Alma's Way: Authentic Playful Learning Across Platforms
ALMA'S WAY is an animated PBS KIDS series for kids ages 4-6 that follows Alma Rivera, a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl, as she ventures through the Bronx and learns to think for herself—making mistakes but learning from them, too! In this session intended for parents, caregivers, and educators, participants will hear from Supervising Producer Olubunmi Mia Olufemi about how series’ learning goals are integrated into the show’s storytelling and animation. Mallory Mbalia, Director of Learning and Education at Fred Rogers Productions, will lead participants in a deeper dive with Alma’s “Think Through” strategy, and how it models a way to think critically and practice responsible decision making. She will also discuss media as a literacy tool.  Rocío Almanza Guillén, Digital Producer of Alma’s Way, will explain the process and importance of developing high-quality educational media and resources in English and Spanish that respect Hispanic and Latin audiences in the US. The session will also cover playful learning examples on the show, the website, games, and resources available on PBS KIDS for Parents and how they support the series' learning goals, cultural awareness, and literacy development.
