Online Seminar: The Future in Motion. New Mobility for New Times.

The Japan Foundation will be honored to host the seminar “The Future in Motion. New Mobility for New Times”. This will be an online hybrid event taking both places simultaneously at The Higher Technical School of Architecture (ETSAM) of the Technical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, UPM) and the University of Tokyo. Among our guests will be a panel of experts in urbanism and urban planning: Professor Manabu Chiba, director of Chiba Manabu Architects and Professor at the University of Tokyo, as well as Professor José Mª Ezquiaga, PhD in Architecture from the Technical University of Madrid. Both will be the keynote speakers. Furthermore, Dr. Fernando Ortiz-Moya, an urban policy researcher at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies in Japan, and Alba Balmaseda, assistant professor from the University of Stuttgart (Germany) and Ph.D. candidate at Roma Tre University (Italy), will also participate in the event.

The main focus will be the actual challenges that mobility and eco-sustainability pose to post-pandemic urbanism. The exhibition 'Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture' which benefited from the collaboration and support of the Japan Foundation, Madrid and was held at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, served as the basis for this new architecture seminar. The conference will last 2 hours and will be given in English.

He had worked as a partner of Factor N associates as well as the campus planning office in the University of Tokyo. He had been the assistant professor of Tadao ANDO at the University of Tokyo from 1996 to 2001 and he was Associate Professor from 2001 to 2013, and Guest Professor in ETH Zurich from 2009 to 2010. In 2017 he was invited to be Guest Critique in the Harvard Graduate School of Design and he was Vice President of the University of Tokyo from 2016 to 2018. Chiba Manabu Architects was established in 2001 and he has engaged in extensive projects which range from government office buildings to private residential houses. Chiba’s architectural planning draws upon the relationship between architecture and urban space. He always examines the sites closely and attempts to deduce the governing rules... José Mª Ezquiaga José Mª Ezquiaga has a PhD in Architecture and Sociologist. Tenured Professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. President of the Spanish Association of Planning Practitioners He has been Dean of the College of Architects of Madrid (2015-19) and held various responsibilities in Public Administrations: Director of Planning of the Madrid City Council (1985-88), General Director of Urbanism (1988-91) and General Director of Planning Urban Planning and Coordination of the Region of Madrid (1991-95). He was the Founder and Principal at Ezquiaga Architecture Society and Territory EAST, having been distinguished with various professional awards and recognitions, including the ECTP-CEU European Urbanism Award 2012, the Spain National Award for Urbanism 2005, the Award at the Spanish Biennial on Architecture BEAU 2013, the Research Award at the IberoAmerican Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism 2012, the Gubbio European Award from the Associazione Nazionale Centri Storico-Artistici... Fernando Ortiz-Moya Fernando Ortiz-Moya is an urbanist exploring how cities adapt and respond to socioeconomic and environmental problems. He focuses on urban policies to accelerate sustainable development transitions, sharing insights in policy reports and peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as speaking at international forums on sustainable development. His research revolves around two key developmental challenges faced by today’s cities: (1) urban shrinkage and decay, and (2) cities’ localisation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including their development of Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs). Fernando is currently a policy researcher at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan. Before joining IGES, he was an associate professor at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. He has a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Tokyo, an M.Sc. in Urban Studies from the University of Edinburgh, and an M.Arch in Architecture and Urban Planning... Alba Balmaseda Domínguez Alba Balmaseda Domínguez (La Coruña, 1985), is an architect by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) since 2010. Her final degree project obtained the qualification of Outstanding and was the winner of the ASCER national award in 2011. In 2006 - 2007, she was selected to develop the ERASMUS programme at the Università degli Studi de La Sapienza, Rome. She completed her Master's Degree in Advanced Architectural Projects in September 2011. She has carried out several research and training stays in different foreign institutions: Vastu Shilpa Foundation (Ahmedabad, India), University of Nairobi (Nairobi, Kenya), Tokyo Wonder Site (Tokyo, Japan), IAUV (Venice, Italy), KADK (Copenhagen, Denmark), TU Berlin (Berlin, Germany) and KU Leuven (Leuven, Belgium). She has collaborated on different occasions with I + P Arquitectura (Vigo, Spain), Vivero de Iniciativas Ciudadanas-VIC (Madrid, Spain) and Anupama Kundoo Architects (Pondicherry, India; Berlin, Germany)...
