He also works as Government Relations Coordinator at the University of Regina Students Union (URSU). He is very passionate about international students' issues. He also works as Program Coordinator for the Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC). He volunteers with various policy organizations in his free time. His interests are post-secondary education, Climate Crisis, and Tech policy issues. Yağmur Küçükakyüz (@ECUAD) Yağmur Küçükakyüz is an international student from Turkey, currently in the 4th year at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Yağmur notes, “Like many international students, tuition was (and still is) very important to me when deciding on schools. I wanted to get a good education and didn't want to go broke while doing so.” Adding that, “I joined my school's student union to be able to do something rather than sitting on the side and getting angry with no action. Even before I would try my best to advocate for international students.” Rahil Adeli (@SFU) Rahil Adeli (she/her) is a union organizer, social planner, and migrant rights activist based in Vancouver, BC. Noticing the exploitation and exclusion of international students during her master's studies at Simon Fraser University, Rahil got involved in fighting for migrant students’ rights. During her work at the SFU Graduate Students Society and Teaching Support Staff Union, she established the IGS (International Graduate Students) group and Migrant Students United Chapter at SFU (MSU at SFU) to bring migrant students together and collectively demand fair rights for them. MSU at SFU’s mandate is fighting against the exclusionary and unjust policies and rules that impact the life and studies of international students in Canada and BC. MSU demands fair fee structures, smooth and inclusive pathways toward Permanent Residency, and better support for migrant students. Rahil is also a cofounder and codirector of City in Colour, an urban consultancy cooperative. Natalia Perez (@SFU) Natalia is a mature international student and a passionate activist pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Geography at Simon Fraser University. During her long-term involvement with the Teaching Support Staff Union, she has campaigned to extend labour rights to international students and reduce international student fees. She has also advocated the protection of Venezuelan migrants/refugees, Colombian civil society leaders, and local communities resisting large mining and energy projects in the Global South. Her activism and scholarly work seek to raise awareness about the interconnectedness between human rights abuses and labour issues in the Global North and the Global South and to forge political alliances and solidarity across uneven geographies. Syed Hussan (@Migrant Workers Alliance for Change) Syed Hussan is the Executive Director of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change and serves on the Secretariat of the Migrant Rights Network. The Migrant Workers Alliance for Change is a democratic membership-based organization of migrants including farmworkers, domestic workers and migrant students. For the last 15 years, Hussan has been part of successful pushes to win rights and dignity for migrants including winning Canada's first Sanctuary City policy in Toronto; coordinating hunger strike actions by people in immigration detention; changes to Canada's medical inadmissibility laws, and numerous provincial laws. In addition, Hussan has been part of the FreeGrassy campaign to support Grassy Narrows First Nations in their struggle to have their river cleaned and their way of life protected since 2007; and he is the co-founder of RememberJan29 aimed at fighting anti-Muslim hatred in the aftermath of Quebec City mass shooting in January 2017. Kashish Hukku Jani (@Emily Carr University of Art + Design) Kashish Hukku Jani (she/her) is an international student at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, pursuing a Bachelor of Design. A native of India, her design practice is influenced by the aesthetic traditions and cultures of her homeland. Currently, through her grad project, Hukku Jani is exploring decolonization in art institutions through an Indian Folk Art lens. She is a student representative on Emily Carr University’s senate as well as a member at large of its student’s union. At present, she is involved in campaigns against tuition hikes, advocating the capping of international student fees and the fair treatment of BIPOC students that enter the country to access a better life for themselves.
