SPECIAL DISCUSSION: AN UPDATE ON ASEAN’S EFFORTS IN MYANMAR
ASEAN STUDIES CENTRE

About the Special Discussion

The rapidly changing global geopolitical environment post-Ukraine and domestic challenges of recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic have distracted the region from bringing Myanmar back into the ASEAN fold. As the ASEAN Chair, Cambodia plays an important and critical role in ensuring the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus and reaching a level of consensus in ASEAN's response to the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. With the growing complexities in Myanmar’s political development, what are ASEAN’s options and the special envoy’s possible courses of action in facilitating and mediating constructive dialogue with all parties concerned? Following ASEAN Special Envoy Prak Sokhonn’s second official mission to Myanmar late last month, the Special Discussion on An Update on ASEAN’s Efforts in Myanmar will discuss the stalled implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, especially in engaging with different stakeholders in Myanmar and in distributing humanitarian assistance via the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre).

H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia will deliver the keynote speech on ASEAN’s response to the recent developments in Myanmar, including updates on his second official visit to Myanmar and the way forward for ASEAN.
