2020 is a year like no other, law enforcement agencies around the country had to reckon with a global pandemic that thrust the entire world into uncertainty and required agencies to be creative to ensure they were able to maintain a healthy workforce. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed while in custody due to the actions of a Minnesota police officer, sparking national protests that resonate today. Agencies and individual officers alike had to reflect upon and respond to community demands. While some of the criticism of law enforcement is fair at a macro level, for the individual officers doing a good job day in and day out in a tough, it has taken a toll. This presentation will discuss how 2020 has changed officers and explore ideas about how groups such as the Nebraska Critical Incident Stress Management Team, can support officers and their families.
