The Coalition of Religious Communities is hosting this candidate forum on hunger, homelessness and housing for the candidates in the Democratic Primary election for Utah Senate District 13, which includes Sugar House, South Salt Lake, and parts of West Valley City, Millcreek and Murray.
We are grateful that both the incumbent, Gene Davis, and his opponent, Nate Blouin, have agreed to participate.
Here are the questions that we sent to both of the candidates:
-Last year bills to eliminate the sales tax on food were proposed in the House but were never got out of the House Rules committee. Would you be willing to co-sponsor legislation in the Senate to eliminate the sales tax on food?
-This year the state of Washington passed a bill declaring that chronic homelessness is a medical condition and that permanent supportive housing is a form of healthcare. Would you support similar legislation in Utah and/or funding for building and operating permanent supportive housing?
-The time of life when a person in this country is most likely to become homeless is infancy. Would you support funding and/or legislation to spur the production of more low income housing that meets the needs of families with children?
