Description
A new report from nuclear arms expert Sharon Squassoni from the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University (GW) analyzes the potential national and international risks of new nuclear reactor projects both in the U.S. and abroad.
The climate crisis has renewed interest in nuclear energy as a way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2023, the United States and 21 other countries pledged to triple nuclear energy by 2050. They devoted zero attention to the national security implications of attempting such an enormous expansion of nuclear energy. Drone strikes against Ukrainian nuclear power plants are the most recent example of nuclear power plant vulnerabilities. But other national security risks will arise with a significant expansion, including nuclear weapons proliferation, energy insecurity and nuclear terrorism.
