Reverend Hayward is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. She has an undergraduate degree in comparative religion from Tufts University and graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Harvard Divinity School. She is currently on the faculty of Harvard Divinity School. Previously, she worked at the US Institute of Peace and taught at Georgetown University and George Washington University. She lectures about religion and international affairs at the US Foreign Service Institute.
