Navigating the First-Ever Mandatory Cybersecurity Directive for Oil and Gas Pipelines

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced in July 2021 the issuance of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) second Security Directive. This time-sensitive directive creates mandatory cybersecurity rules for owners and operators of TSA-designated "critical" pipelines and liquified natural gas (LNG) facilities "to implement a number of urgently needed protections against cyber intrusions." The security directive is part of an increasingly urgent government effort to strengthen cybersecurity for critical industries in light of the recent Colonial Pipeline shutdown and other security incidents.
