Why Is There So Little Interest in Public Health Compared to the Latest Medical Breakthroughs?
On November 17, SWINY co-chair David Levine (@dlloydlevine) will talk with physician and public health advocate Michael D. Stein (@mdsteinmd) about his new book Me vs. Us: A Health Divided (Oxford University Press, September 2022). In Me vs. Us, Dr. Stein offers eight reasons why our interest in the technologies and delivery of health care supersedes our interest in public health and its focus on the core social, economic, and environmental forces that shape health. The misplaced emphasis on health care endangers us. It puts us at risk because the solutions to our most concerning health crises, from obesity to climate change, will not come from self-concern or individual actions but from the “Us” perspective of public health.
