Glimpses of And Still We Rise: Denmark Vesey and Revolution
The Haitian Revolution (1791-1803) was one of the most successful rebellions in the western hemisphere. It ended slavery and French colonial control over Haiti. Like many others during this time, Denmark Vesey (1767-1822) was inspired by the Haitian revolution and attempted what would have been the largest revolt by enslaved people in US history. Unfortunately, the plan was exposed, and Vesey and other co-conspirators were captured and executed by plantation owners.
