ICA Mondiacult Side-Event (Hybrid) - Cooperatives are a key stakeholder in advancing SDGs through Culture and Creative Sector
The side-event is organized with the aim to advocate the positioning of the “cooperative enterprise” in the global policy processes and dialogues concerning culture and sustainable development.

The event will be hosted hybrid, simultaneously from the premises of Smart Belgium in Brussels and the Office of Cooperatives of the Americas in San José, Costa Rica between 13h00-17h00 CET.

Whereas the event was conceived based on the implementation of the recommendations of the parallel session 1.4 (Cooperative Culture and Safeguarding Cultural Heritage) of the 33rd World Cooperative Congress on Deepening our Cooperative Identity, the premise for participating in Mondiacult which is a conference on cultural policies and sustainable development, are the following:

(i) Deepening the understanding and recognition of the inscription of the idea and practice of organizing shared interests into cooperatives as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO in 2016;
(ii) Acknowledging the urgent need to promote cooperatives in the cultural sector to defend the lives and livelihoods of creative workers;
(iii) Realizing further, the 5th Cooperative Principle as the important instrument to promote cooperative culture.

The main objectives of participating in Mondiacult are the following:

a. Make known widely, the scale, scope, and potential of cooperatives in the cultural sector
b. Position cooperatives in the UNESCO discussions regarding cultural policies for sustainable development
c. Help cooperative organizations leverage the support – financial and otherwise, extended by UNESCO for institutions supporting culture
