Preparing for an emergency: What you need to know about kidney disease and food safety
Did you know people with kidney disease or a kidney transplant have a higher risk for foodborne illness? Food safety is just as important for staying healthy as following a kidney-friendly eating plan. And, when you experience an emergency like severe weather that causes power outages and floods, the safety of your food could be in danger. We can't always predict when something will happen to derail our treatment plans. But there are some simple steps you can take to make sure you are prepared and have access to the things you need to stay healthy and ensure you have safe food.

Ensuring that people with kidney disease are able to access the health care and tools they need to survive and thrive is at the heart of the American Kidney Fund's mission. And this is especially true during times of emergency such as a flood, hurricane, or tornado. AKF disaster relief grants help kidney patients pay for essentials during this state of emergency such as lost medications and special kidney-friendly meals.
