NMS Conference - What We Carry With Us: Remembering 1942 and Beyond
What We Carry With Us: Remembering 1942 and Beyond is a conference organised by the National Museum of Singapore (NMS) in conjunction with its ongoing special exhibition Dislocations: Memory and Meaning of the Fall of Singapore, 1942, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore. It will be held physically at NMS, and will be concurrently live-streamed on Zoom and NMS’s Facebook page. While the morning session (before lunch) will only be live-streamed on Zoom and Facebook, the afternoon session (after lunch) will both be live-streamed and held on-site at NMS.

What We Carry With Us brings together academics, artists, heritage guides, and student-researchers to explore and reflect on how the Fall of Singapore has been remembered and commemorated through the decades. How has an event such as the Fall of Singapore impacted the way that Singaporeans view themselves? How does memory of a historical event persist when the generation with first-hand experience has passed on? Can and should these inherited wartime memories be revisited? These are some of the questions that What We Carry With Us seeks to address.
