She comes to this position from an IJC host organization, Catholic Migration Services of Brooklyn and Queens, where she served as the Managing Attorney for the Immigration Unit. Specializing in removal defense and asylum law, Alex has practiced immigration law for 15 years at two other IJC host organizations, Central American Legal Assistance and American Friends Service Committee, as well as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. She also worked at Safe Horizon in the Queens Family Court Program. During her career, Alexandra has represented hundreds of individuals facing removal from the United States. Angelica Gualpa (Fellowship Associate @Immigrant Justice Corps) Angelica Gualpa is a first-generation, Latinx student pursuing her MPA at NYU Robert F. Wagner’s Graduate School of Public Service. At CUNY Citizenship Now! Angelica worked as a Paralegal delivering free legal services to the immigrant community across New York City. After advocating for immigrants rights in the public sector for 5+ years, she aspires to enter law school and create a nonprofit organization that provides detainees with free, high-quality immigration representation along the U.S Southern border. Christa Stewart (Deputy Director @Immigrant Justice Corps) Christa Stewart, Deputy Director, recently worked for Equality Now, managing litigation and global advocacy for women’s and girls’ rights. Prior to joining Equality Now, Christa worked for the New York State Bureau of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance (OTDA) leading work on human trafficking, unaccompanied minors and newcomer outreach. Prior to OTDA, she served as Director of Legal Services at The Door, a youth development agency. Before The Door, she worked at Safe Horizon in a number of capacities managing sexual assault, child advocacy and human trafficking programs and at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Edwin Casa Prieto (2021 Justice Fellow @Immigrant Justice Corps) Before law school, Edwin worked in the hospitality business, managing restaurants. During law school, he began working with the American Friends Service Committee assisting immigration attorneys and working on a variety of affirmative and defensive cases. Edwin found the work rewarding and it inspired him to continue on the path to becoming an immigration attorney. He will be working with Lutheran Social Services of New York as an Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow. Nicole Alanko (2018 Justice Fellow @Immigrant Justice Corps) Nicole is serving as a Justice Fellow at William & Mary Law School’s Immigration Clinic, her alma mater, in Williamsburg, VA. As a Fellow in the Clinic, Nicole will share her expertise and work closely with students in the Clinic to serve immigrants in Hampton Roads. The Clinic represents immigrants in affirmative proceedings before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Arlington Immigration Court. Before her third year Fellowship, Nicole served as an IJC Fellow at Safe Horizon in Brooklyn, NY. During her time at Safe Horizon, she represented survivors of violence, crime, and torture in their immigration proceedings before USCIS and the Immigration Court. In addition to her casework, she was involved in Safe Horizon’s anti-racism policy initiatives, trained pro bono attorneys for days of service, and drafted a response on behalf of Safe Horizon to sweeping changes to asylum regulations.
