TEPSA Debate: The Implications of the French Presidential Election in the EU
In the first half of 2022, the European Union finds itself at a crossroads. After two years of a global pandemic, and the ensuing economic and social fallout, Putin’s Russia invaded Ukraine, setting into motion a major geopolitical crisis cutting to the very heart of EU policy. In such a context, strong European leadership and solidarity is badly needed in order to steer the continent through this period of crisis, and to establish it more firmly on the world stage.

In a rare occurrence, the French Presidential Election (taking place on 10 and 24 April 2022) coincides with the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This poses a risk to the priorities of the French Presidency, should there be a change in administration, and thus risks putting EU governance in jeopardy at a crucial juncture. On May 3, once the dust has settled in a heated Presidential campaign and the world knows who will occupy the Elysée for the next five years, TEPSA will gather five key experts to discuss the outcomes of the French Presidential Election on Europe and the wider world.
