In the first of a series of webinars providing a guide to corporate offsetting, the focus will be on the role of carbon markets in reaching net zero emissions. Although this session is designed as a foundation for more advanced topics in the series, it nonetheless comprehensively covers:
• The meaning of decarbonisation and net zero
• Scopes 1-3 in the context of carbon footprinting
• Introduction to compliance carbon markets and voluntary carbon markets
• Overview of the role played by standards, project developers, and exchanges in both markets
• Offsetting methodologies
• Permanence, additionality, and leakage
• Carbon credit issuances and retirement
• Different approaches to offsetting
Viewers will also have a Q&A session with industry-leading speakers Mark Lewis and Karim Kanji at the end.

He worked at Barclays Capital for eight years and personally transacted many hundreds of millions of EU Allowances (EUAs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) as lead emissions trader. Karim has been a market-maker for exchanges and OTC markets in multiple commodities. He also has extensive experience of structuring, negotiating and trading physical and financial forwards, futures, swaps and options with clients. From helping establish electricity forward trading agreements under the UK’s New Electricity Trading Arrangements in 2001, to playing a key role in developing standardised CER trading, Karim has played a key role in managing risks and providing liquidity in new and rapidly evolving markets. Mark Lewis (Head of Climate Research @Andurand Capital LLP) Mark is Head of Climate Research at Andurand Capital LLP since June 2021. Prior to his current role Mark was Chief Sustainability Strategist at BNP Paribas Asset Management , and before that a sell-side analyst for 20 years covering the energy space as both an equity and a commodities analyst: as Managing Director and Head of European Utilities Research at Barclays, Chief Energy Economist at Kepler Cheuvreux, and at Deutsche Bank as MD and Global Head of Carbon and Energy Research and Director, European Utilities equity research. He has also worked for the leading energy think tank Carbon Tracker, as MD and Head of Re-search, and for the German utility E.ON as Deputy Head of Investor Relations. Prior to his career as a sell-side analyst Mark worked as a sovereign credit ana-lyst at Standard & Poor’s, and as an academic at the University of London. Mark has been a member of the Financial Stability Board’s Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) since May 2016.
