Growing Tomatoes I: Variety & Seed Starting
This class is the first of three sessions on tomatoes. The first session focuses on variety selection and seed starting. Session 2 (3/29) will cover buying a good tomato start and what to do with it before the soil warms up. Session 3 (5/3) will cover planting out into the garden or container, supporting plants of various sizes, cultural practices (watering, fertilizing, pruning, etc.), and disease management.

We begin with strategies for selecting from among the thousands of available varieties, so you enjoy a long season of harvest. Then we show you, step-by-step, how to start tomatoes from seeds.

Using images and discussion, we will cover how to select growing media, the traditional method of planting in cells as well as the method of making and planting in soil blocks. The session continues with when to sow seeds, what supplies are needed, how to care for seedlings, and how to minimize diseases.

Our speaker Amelia Wilbur is an Oregon State University Extension Master Gardener who teaches for the award-winning 10-Minute University™ Program. She and her husband once co-owned a tomato grafting business. They grow a wide variety of vegetables and fruit plants in their 3.5-acre home garden and annually harvest more than 500 pounds of tomatoes.
