Kiefner Technical Training - Session #5A & 5B: Defect Assessment Methods
Pipelines operate safely with the presence of corrosion defects and cracks. After detection, operators must determine which defects are safe and which need repair. Fundamental, regulatory accepted methods for determining the remaining strength of pipe with corrosion and cracking are presented. This course presents the fundamental aspects of the assessment equations for pipeline defects and their use. The defect assessment spreadsheet KAPA (Kiefner & Associates Pipe Assessment) for the assessment of corrosion and cracks will be distributed and demonstrated.

Topics include:
- Development of analysis methods for metal loss including the Folias factor
- Defect interaction considerations
- B31G, Modified B31G and the effective area method
- Development of the log-secant analysis method for cracks
- Emerging assessment equations
- KAPA for assessing of corrosion demonstration and workshop exercises
